A lot of people search for answers about taking tadalafil and sildenafil together, especially when one medication does not seem to work well enough on its own. Since Cialis (tadalafil) and Viagra (sildenafil) belong to the same class of drugs, it is easy to assume that combining them might create a stronger effect.

In practice, that is not the standard approach. Both medications are PDE5 inhibitors, and both work by improving blood flow to help treat erectile dysfunction. Because they act on the same pathway, taking them too close together can increase the risk of side effects instead of simply improving results.

How Tadalafil and Sildenafil Work

Both drugs help relax blood vessels during sexual stimulation. That makes it easier to get and maintain an erection, but it also means they can lower blood pressure to some degree.

The biggest practical difference is duration. Sildenafil is usually taken as needed and works for a shorter window. Tadalafil lasts much longer, which is why people sometimes underestimate how much overlap they may still have in their system when they take another ED pill later. That longer window is one reason mixing the two is not something to do casually.

Can You Take Cialis and Viagra Together?

For most people, the practical answer is no — not without medical supervision.

That does not mean the combination has never been studied. There is limited published research on daily tadalafil plus as-needed sildenafil, but that is very different from saying the mix is routine or broadly recommended. Official labeling for both Cialis and Viagra says combination use with other PDE5 inhibitors has not been studied well enough to recommend it.

Why Mixing Them Can Be Risky

The main issue is additive effect. Both drugs can widen blood vessels, so taking them together can make side effects more noticeable and, in some cases, more dangerous. That matters even more if you also take medications such as nitrates or alpha-blockers, or if you use strong CYP3A4 inhibitors.

Common problems can include:

  • headache and flushing

  • dizziness or lightheadedness

  • nasal congestion and indigestion

  • a bigger drop in blood pressure than expected

  • a higher risk of overlapping side effects because tadalafil stays in the body longer

Why Timing Still Matters

A lot of people think the risk only applies if both pills are taken at the exact same moment. That is not really how it works. Because tadalafil can remain active long after the first dose, someone may still have meaningful drug levels in their body hours later — or even the next day — when sildenafil is added.

That is why the real question is not only “can you take Viagra and Cialis at the same time?” but also whether the two drugs are overlapping at all. Even a low-dose regimen can still create clinically meaningful combined exposure.

When to Get Medical Help

If someone takes both medications and feels unwell, the symptoms should not be brushed off as routine.

Get urgent medical attention if you have:

  • chest pain or severe weakness

  • fainting or near-fainting

  • sudden vision or hearing loss

  • an erection lasting more than four hours

What to Try Before Combining Them

In many cases, the better next step is not combining two ED drugs, but optimizing one. That may mean adjusting the dose, improving timing, taking sildenafil more appropriately around meals, or switching from one medication to the other instead of overlapping them.

It also helps to look at the bigger picture. Some men do not get the expected result because of uncontrolled diabetes, vascular disease, alcohol use, medication interactions, or performance anxiety. That is one reason the AUA guideline and the CUA guideline both frame oral therapy as the first-line route, with more complex decisions reserved for tougher cases.

The Bottom Line

If you are asking whether you can take tadalafil and sildenafil together, the safest practical answer is usually no without guidance from a clinician. The combination is not standard first-line care, and official drug labeling warns against using these medications with other PDE5 inhibitors because the safety and effectiveness of that approach have not been established.

For most people, it makes more sense to optimize one medication first, review other health factors that may be affecting response, and only discuss any possible overlap with a qualified medical professional.
